Serbian-Americans: A Vibrant Diaspora in the United States

A Historical Perspective

The Serbian American diaspora is a significant community with a long history in the United States. In 2007, there were an estimated 172,834 people of Serbian nationality or descent living in the United States.

From Immigrant Arrivals to Community Establishment

The first Serbian immigrants arrived in the United States in the late 19th century, primarily from Austria-Hungary. They settled in urban centers, such as New York City, Chicago, and Pittsburgh, where they worked in factories and mines.

Over time, Serbian immigrants established their own communities, building churches, schools, and cultural organizations. These institutions helped preserve Serbian traditions and foster a sense of belonging among the diaspora.
